About

"My work consists of expressive female portraits in gray tones with strong color accents, built up in layers with the spatula.
Inspired by emotion, strength and rawness, she creates art that not only wants to be seen, but also felt."
- Christel Schuurman

My name is Christel Schuurman. As a child, I learned to paint from my grandmother. She taught me the basics, as well as a love of paint, shapes, and freedom. Since then, I've developed my own style, with a focus on feeling, expression, and feminine power.

My work consists primarily of female portraits, painted in shades of gray with bold color accents, often gold or strong base colors. Each painting is constructed with rough, layered strokes using a spatula. I don't use brushes.

I'm inspired by the emotions inherent in a face: serenity, sensuality, strength, and rawness. My work often begins with a photograph, but evolves along the way into something unique, emotive, and unpolished.

What do I hope people feel with my work? Art that wants to be felt, not just seen.
Something that lingers. Something that resonates.
